Each year as the “Spring Break’ cycle begins it reminds us that summer is just around the corner. Each year we collaborate with other local pantries to do a food drive that will allow us to get food into the pantries just before the children get out of school for the summer months. In past years, we have collected food at the local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores.
Last year we have added a feature to the food drive to bring attention to the need. With the help of KXXV-TV, Wal-Mart, Rapoport Academy, Premier High School, Waco Charter School, Harmony School of Innovation and Baylor University the students built things out of the cans collected. The point will be to bring attention to the Child hunger problem we have in our community as the schools compete to see who can collect the most food and design and build something amazing out of the food collected.
Over 95% of the children enrolled in local schools (around 13,000) qualify for “free and reduced” lunches. When school is out for the summer, less than 10% have access to a nutritious lunch. Children from lower income families are more likely to experience hunger and “food insecurity”, which has a lifelong effect: lower reading and math scores, more physical and mental health problems, more emotional and behavioral problems and a greater chance of obesity.
Education is the key to breaking generational poverty when kids get enough nutritional food; they are more likely to excel in school.
(Being “food insecure”, means they may not know where their next meal is coming from and or may not have access to the healthiest possible food options.)
The schools are collecting food now so they can have their respective projects completed by March 28. Baylor students will build their project April 13th, “Steppin Out” day. The final phase of the food drive will be collecting food at the local Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club stores, Saturday, April 13 from 10am to 3pm.
We are going to need your help. Children are depending on us.
